How to Convert PCX to HEIC

PCX's 1985-era RLE compression is far less efficient than HEIC's modern HEVC-based compression, especially for photographic or gradient-rich content where PCX's simple compression scheme doesn't perform well. Converting old PCX scans or digitized artwork to HEIC can shrink file sizes considerably, which matters when archiving a large collection of legacy image files.

HEIC also supports 10-bit color depth, well beyond what PCX's older structure typically handles, though the actual benefit depends on whether your source PCX file contains that much color information to begin with.
